One design at a time

A history nerd's ongoing attempt to understand how World War II machines worked.

I've always been a great student of history, but I found that when it comes to the machinery, I have a very surface-level understanding of how it actually works.

This project started with animating the Enigma machine. I needed to press the button a hundred times to see the rotors turn and the electrical current flow, before it finally made sense. From there, I built 3D models of the Bombe, the B-17 bomber, the Bantam jeep, the Mitsubishi A6M Zero, a gear hobbing machine, and several more.

The Enigma machine was where this began.

These are primarily a way for me to learn, and hopefully by sharing them there will be others who also benefit. Currently, all of the models should be considered works in progress. I have a pretty sweet internal tool for making refinements, but this internal tool itself still needs refinement!
